The video was posted on social media and quickly sparked public outrage as the images are disturbing. Defiant, the Inpec official hurls abuse at and beats the woman, who, despite being an adult, seems completely vulnerable to the attack.
In a heart-wrenching exchange, a guard can be heard shouting: “So mk! (while giving him the first slap) Take out what you got. Did you see MK’s face or what?”, to which the prisoner replies, “Well, I don’t have anything.”
The guard immediately says “Hand him over” and gives him a second blow. A distressed woman trying to defend herself with words when physically attacked responds: “Oops, dragon, I’m not disrespecting you.”
As the guard continues his insults, the victim loses his composure, his voice visibly breaking: “I don’t recognize you,” he insists. Finally, the guard yells at him, “Respect, no shit!”
The situation is even more alarming when we note that several Inpec officials are surrounding the prisoners during the attack and a security dog is running around the area. In this hostile environment, no one intervenes to stop the aggression; On the contrary, insults multiply and beatings become the norm.
Organizations such as Mujeres Libres have used their social media platforms to expose the plight of prisoners who not only suffer physical abuse but also face problems with poor quality food and unacceptable hygiene conditions. In May 2024, a group of women held at El Buen Pastor began a hunger strike to protest these deplorable conditions.
In a statement issued by the organization, pe explains that the strike was triggered by the distribution of poor-quality food, including meat with an unpleasant smell. Despite complaints, the feeding authorities refused to replace the products, demonstrating an alarming lack of regard for the basic needs of prisoners.
In addition to poor nutrition, prisoners reported serious problems in sanitary conditions, especially in Yard 6, where leakages of urine and faeces were reported, which directly affect the fields where they carry out their activities.
In a statement, Mujeres Libres stressed: “This situation is not only outrageous, but also poses a significant risk to their health and can cause serious problems and illnesses.”
The inmate recently filed a protective suit that led a judge to guarantee her right to access adequate medical services. The protection was filed on the advice of the criminal court prosecutor 87 in Villavicencio, who pointed out the violations that the prisoner suffered since her transfer from the Acacías prison, Meta.
The legal appeal focused on the lack of medical care the prisoner experienced upon her arrival in Bogotá. Despite an unfavorable medical diagnosis, he did not receive the necessary specialized carewhich revealed the dire situation of helplessness many prisoners face.
“It raised the issue because since it was an emergency, they only gave him analgesics for pain relief and he didn’t get any help from the prison to schedule his EPS appointments,” the deputy prosecutor pointed out.
Due to this situation, the judge 19 execution of sentences and security measures from Bogotá ordered the prison director to guarantee priority access to medical services. In his ruling, the judge emphasized that the prison system had failed in its duty to care for the health of prisoners, stressing that “the right to health cannot be limited or affected by their condition in prison.”
